In Scripture, we find three distinct groups of people who exercise some form of leadership in the church:
CongregationThe congregation represents the final authority on all matters of church life. Recognising that both Jesus and Paul appealed to the congregation as the deciding body on matters of discipline, we are a congregational church. This congregational life expresses itself through members involving themselves in one another’s lives, holding member’s meetings at which the congregation governs itself under God, and emphasising in our teaching the centrality of the gathered body.
Elders and DeaconsIn their role as overseers, the elders guide the church, particularly focusing on matters concerning teaching, preaching, and prayer. The elders direct the spiritual life of the church at the pleasure of the congregation, handling matters relevant to the Word and prayer. The deacons assist the elders by facilitating ministry.
StaffIn an effort to facilitate the ministry of the entire church, we have called on some to work in a paid capacity. The role of church staff is to enable the daily ministry of the congregation in a variety of capacities including leadership, teaching, resourcing, organising and equipping.
