| What Can We Know About Jesus Historically? |
|
After all this time, what can we really know about Jesus? Has the real Jesus been so buried by legend that he is now lost to people living today?
Not all the information about Jesus comes from devoted followers. The impact of Jesus was significant enough that some references to him have come down to us from sources either indifferent to Christianity or in open hostility towards it.
Christianity is more than a set of philosophical ideas. Because Christian faith is foundationally connected to the person of Jesus - his birth, his life, his death, his resurrection - events that are all claimed to have happened at a point in history and a place on the planet, Christianity is therefore open to historical questions. Did these events really happen? And if they didn't, then the bottom falls out.
Our primary access to the events of Jesus' life are open to us only through the words of the eyewitness. Can we rely on their accounts of the life of Jesus? |
