Growth Groups

A Growth Group is a place where Christians can grow.

Small groups of people meet in homes during the week to enjoy each other's company and to further explore the Christian faith.  In the context of the Christian life these Growth Groups can be a power-house of mutual encouragement and Christian nurture where relationships are formed, where the Word is applied to each person's life, and where prayer can focus on the particular needs of individuals.

Why Join A Group?

People go to small groups for all sorts of reasons - to make friends, to receive encouragement, to learn.  But the primary reason for belonging to a Growth Group is that it gives us the opportunity to love and encourage other people in Christ.  We go to Growth Groups not primarily to have our needs met, but to meet the needs of others.  Paradoxically, the more we focus on loving others and doing whatever we can for them, the more encouragement and strength we find ourselves.

Here are five ways we can love and encourage others in the context of a Growth Group

  • Being There - our regular presence in a group communicates the importance we place on other people: they are our top priority.
  • Arriving Prepared - having read ahead and thought about the topic or passage is of obvious benefit to us, but more significantly it puts us in a better place to encourage others by saying things that stimulate, motivate and teach others.
  • Personal Prayer - praying for others is not always easy, but it is one of the most loving things we can do for the other members of the group, because God will work in people's lives in answer to our prayers.
  • Sharing Yourself - revealing your thoughts, struggles and joys is a way of serving others and encouraging them to be helpfully honest.  The intention isn't group therapy, but rather an authenticity with each other and opening up about your life can lead the way.
  • Loving Others - aim at making every word that you say and every action you take count for the good of others.  Your kind deeds and gracious words outside of the group time are another opportunity to love and encourage others.
