Who We Are
Where Have We Come From

February 1986

HASTINGS (Cnr Lyndon and Karamu Roads).

The Rev Ian Brown, Dinesh and Olwyn Halden and Rev. Brian Smith have ministered to us. The Boys' Brigade Company celebrated its 50th Jubilee. Zach's Fair was an outstanding success. End of year functions included - Combined coffee group's luncheon - a special Christmas Family Service featuring Sunday School children "Over 40s" Mystery Car Tour and barbecue - Carols by Candlelight in Civic Square and Christmas Day Service. We pray for the Pritchards.

March 1986

HASTINGS (Cnr Lyndon and Karamu Roads), Rev Peter Pritchard, 10.30, 7.

Havelock North Fellowship continues to thrive as does the work at Zach's, Flaxmere. We sympathise with Ann and David Gaskell on the death of Anne's mother and with Pat and Bob Tarrant on the death of Bob's father, also with Marion and Bob Thomas on the death of Bob's father. Recently a baptismal service was held when Fred and Di Stephenson, and Steven and Adam Dinsdale witnessed to their faith.

April 1986

HASTINGS (Cnr Lyndon and Karamu Roads), Rev Peter Pritchard, 10.30, 7.

The Young People have had a weekend in Taupo. Over 40s explored the area around Turangi and took a launch trip on Lake Taupo. We extend our sympathy to the sisters of Mr and Mrs Horton who died recently. Also to the family of Mr Taylor. We remember him for his quiet manner. We rejoice with folk from Zachs and especially with Thomas McArthur as he witnessed in Baptism. Diane and Matthew Charlton brought Timothy James with thanksgiving to be dedicated. This year our Harvest Festival auction and the Golden Offering will help our missions.

May 1986

HASTINGS (Cnr Lyndon and Karamu Roads), Rev Peter Pritchard, 10.30, 7.

Our church is pleased to be rostered to take services at Eversley Home for the Aged and Duart Hospital. We have also started a fortnightly care and craft centre where folk may enjoy learning a craft, playing games or chatting. We were hosts for an Inter-church meeting to hear Juan Carlos Ortiz. We farewelled Miss Ruth McKenzie, BMMF missionary, and asks God's blessing on her and all with whom she works in Bhutan. We wish Mrs Helen Rishworth well as she goes to live in Taupo. Our loss but Taupo's gain.

June 1986

As from Sunday, May 25, morning worship services will commence at 10 am and afternoon services will be at 4.30 pm. A family day was held at Riverbend Camp recently when we welcomed, as guest speaker, the Rev. Geoff Pound, together with his family Lyn, Mark and Bronwyn from Palmerston North. A special Members' Meeting was held on May 6 to discuss the question of Elders and the restructuring of our church leadership. It was a joy to have the Havelock North Baptist Fellowship leading our evening worship, service recently.

We welcome Lewis and Judith Thompson on transfer from Cambridge with their three boys; their baby Marcus was brought in for dedication. Bruce and Linda Tregonning brought their little daughter, Leigh Hope, in dedication. Zachs held a very successful garage sale and plan a mid-year Christmas dinner. Our church is praying and preparing for the visit of Tom Frew on August 2. Congratulations to Lionel and Dianne Nunns and family as they graduate from Baptist College this year. Neil and Valda Donaldson travel overseas; Graeme Fowler leaves to work in London. It is with deep regret that we receive the resignation of our pastor, Rev Peter Pritchard, and we pray that his health, and that of his family, may improve in the very near future.

September 1986

HASTINGS (Cnr Lyndon & Karamu Rds), Vacant; Youth pastor Will Westrupp, 10, 4.30.

We give God thanks for our recently concluded mission with Tom Frew - for the basic Gospel message presented in a frank but appealing way, and we rejoice with those who found Christ for the first time, and for those who dedicated their lives afresh - thank you, Tom, and may God continue to bless you. We would also like to thank our Sunday school children and their teachers for taking a family service. We were pleased to welcome Dr Basil Rebera as a guest speaker. Welcome home to Blanche Hayward after four years with the Covenant Players.

Youth Pastor Will Westrupp has resigned. We thank him for the work he has done and ask God's blessing on Will, Lorraine and family. Paul Bisley was farewelled to Tasmania for several months to work with an inter-denominational organisation specialising in teaching creative ministries. Congratulations to Audrey Callister who graduated as an enrolled nurse. Best wishes to Diana Boekestyn, Susan Fear and Christine Dunk celebrating 21st birthdays. The old church has been demolished and was farewelled. A communion service was held and a lunch when memories were revived. The Havelock North Fellowship is into its second year with increased numbers and enthusiasm. Blair Burtenshaw from All Saints witnessed to his faith in baptism recently.

December 1986

HASTINGS Cnr Lyndon Rd and Karamu Road 10.30 7.00

We are looking forward to welcoming Student Pastor Ron Mostert and his wife Shirley and their family for the Christmas vacation. Congratulations to Wendy Caldwell on her 21st birthday. At our AGM three Elders and eight Deacons were elected together with nine pastoral visitors. These three groups will meet regularly and will be known as the Church Council. Our BWMU ladies were proud to be the winners of the quilt competition at Assembly. The quilt will be given to the Palmerston North Hostel. Our daughter church at Flaxmere has been accepted into the Baptist Union.

N.Z. Baptist Magazine

Since the first days of the church, Hastings Baptist submitted regular summaries of church life and events to the New Zealand Baptist Magazine.  As part of the centenary archive those updates have been collected and reproduced here.  It is a catalogue of people and moments that have shaped the church’s story.
